The Coal & Industrial Minerals Department is manned by 25 experienced Geologists made up of specialists in various fields of geology including Industrial Mineralogy and Exploration geology. They operate from Exploration field bases located in Bauchi, Obi/Lafia (Nasarawa State), Owerri (Imo Sate) and Akure (Ondo State).
The primary function of the Department is the exploration for Coking Coal, Refractory materials (clay, magnesite, bauxite, kyanite-sillimanite) fluxes (Limestone/Marble, dolomite, fluorspar) and foundry materials (silica sand, quartzite, zircon sand, graphite, talc).
Apart from Coking Coal, the Department also offers services in exploration for other Coal types for generation of Thermal energy for kilns in cement industry, for coal-fired generating plants and coal briquettes for domestic use. The Dept. has vast experience on carbonaceous materials like graphite for refractory and foundry industries.
The Coal & Industrial Minerals Dept. renders professional services on other industrial minerals not directly related to steel, and these include gypsum, diatomite, barites, mica, feldspar, phosphate, trona and precious/semi precious stones.
TECHNIQUES OF EXPLORATION
In carrying out these functions, the following techniques are employed by both Iron and Ferro-alloy Department and Coal & Industrial Minerals Department
LOGISTICS AND DISTRIBUTION
- Conventional geological traversing and mapping to delineate and document industrial rocks deposits. Geological maps and sections are prepared.
- Exploratory pitting and trenching to expose the upper horizons of mineralization and Jogging and documentation of exposures. $ Core Drilling to reveal the underlying mineralization and stragtigraphy, geological logging, sampling and documentation
- Laboratory analysis to determine the quality of the Ores
- Reserves calculation to determine the quantity and viability of the mineral deposits.
Pre-mining and feasibility studies and Environmental Impact Assessment are also carried out by the Agency.
For more effective and reliable result in mineral assessment and evaluation, Iron & Ferro—alloys and Coal & Industrial Minerals Depts. work in conjunction with other Depts./Divisions of the Agency, Including Geophysics, Survey/GIS Engineering geology/Hydrogeology.
